England - North York Moors to Scarborough

Whitby Abbey dates back to the 7th Century when it began as a Christian monastery. Royal Princess Hild founded the it in the Anglo-Saxon style and was used by both men and women. It became a centre of learning and burial place for the royal family of Deira. It wasn't until centuries later that it became a Benedictine abbey.
